Meet Dr. Richter

My name is Charles Richter (Rick) and I have been practicing General Dentistry for 33 years. I graduated from University of Texas Dental Branch @ Houston Texas in 1981. At the end of my sophomore year, I was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. Two days after graduation, the movers came and packed up our apartment. My wife Marlene, and I took off for Virginia and seven days later I was engaged in a General Practice Residency (GPR) Program at the Naval Regional Medical Center at Portsmouth, VA. This intensive one year Residency program involved not only all the disciplines of dentistry, but also included internal medicine, ENT, anesthesia, radiology and general pathology.

At the completion of this program, I was assigned to Naval Hospital, Adak, Alaska. This was a remote Naval hospital located 1200 miles off the Alaskan coast in the Aleutian Islands. For two years, I was one of three general dentists providing dental care to the 5,000 Navy and support personnel stationed there. With no dental specialists available within 1200 miles, we were the sole dental support for this population. Needless to say, we provided every phase of dental care.

In 1984 after my tour of duty was completed, I left active duty, joined the Navy Reserves and returned to San Antonio to begin my private practice career. For the past 28 years, I have practiced dentistry in downtown San Antonio. My Naval Reserve career (which has included several years supporting the Marines) has afforded me the opportunity to practice Navy dentistry in 13 states, Spain. Italy, Central America and Japan. I officially retired from the U.S. Navy in September, 2011.

During our marriage of 34 years, we have raised three great children. This has kept us very busy with extracurricular activities. Besides renovating and maintaining a small family ranch, I enjoy hunting, fishing, softball and motorcycling. My #1 hobby is the restoration of antique cars. Active in the Alamo A’s/Model A Ford Club of America for 40+ years, I have filled many responsibilities. Some of these include editing and publishing our monthly newsletter, Tour Chairman, (local and statewide events, many with over 80 participating antique autos) and, on occasion, helped many friends to repair and restore their cars. I currently have two antique cars and 2 antique motorcycles. My cars include a 31 model A ford (purchased in 1972) and a 66 mustang (purchased in 1981), both of which I personally restored. These vehicles have been very rewarding, however, there will always be another challenging project waiting to be tackled.

I take great pride in practicing dentistry not only for the aesthetics to my patients but also the long lasting relationships enjoyed over the years. My staff support is best in class and to which I owe a great bit of gratitude for their superior performance and dedication to their tasks - keeping our patients smiling and with great satisfaction of services rendered.
